THE SINKING

One late autumn day in 1982, the fifty-eight foot yacht Trashman set sail on a routine trip from Annapolis to Florida , with Debbie Scaling and four others aboard. When the boat sailed into a seventy-knot gale, it went down quickly, leaving the crew adrift in the Atlantic in a rubber dinghy that was quickly surrounded by sharks. Five harrowing days and nights later, when a Russian freighter finally came to their rescue, only two crewmembers remained.

Powerful, adrenaline-charged, utterly consuming, The Sinking is a brave, unforgettable story that plunges to the depth of the human psyche and surfaces with the strength to survive.

Author, Deborah Scaling Kiley has always been an avid sports woman and adventurer. In 1981 she became the first American woman to complete the prestigious and grueling Whitbread Around the World Race. In the fall of 1982 she joined the crew of the sailing yacht Trashman and from that moment on life would never be the same. The Sinking is Debbie's story of that fateful voyage and how she survived against all odds. Since that tragic accident at sea she has appeared on Larry King Live, Inside Edition and Oprah, as well as, a variety of other talk and radio shows in the United States and abroad. In 1997 her story was adapted into a made-for-TV movie entitled Two Came Back staring Melissa Joan Hart. It aired in September of that same year.

The Sinking is a re-release of Debbie's riveting experience told in Untamed Seas and Albatross. The book was renamed, reformatted, and updated to include pictures of the actual rescue taken by the doctor aboard the Russian freighter that plucked Debbie and Brad out of the sea.
